Saltshaker 10

"To express creatively the person we really are in the context of God's worldwide purpose is the most fulfilling experience imaginable."

George Milley (Loving the Church, Reaching the World)

Saltshaker Purpose:

Shake it up! Saltshaker is designed to provide EFC-MAYM Sr. High and older students an opportunity to explore and experience life on the Friends mission field – while serving and encouraging missionaries and the church and community. Christian students who have a desire to serve cross-cultural missions and who are actively maturing as Disciples of Christ should apply for Saltshaker! So apply today and shake it…your salt of the earth (Matt 5:13)… your world view… your faith in God…Shake it in the Unshakable Kingdom!

Saltshaker 2010 is June 24-July 12 to the Philippines based in Pasig City, Metro-Manila

Why Do Short Term Missions?
Not only is it a great avenue for exploring the life of cross-cultural missions and church life, being a part of missions puts you in the middle of God’s action within the Kingdom of God. While it is shaking up your world view, it is also shaking some mission-minded perspectives into your life. You’ll be blown away by what you learn from the missionaries and church leaders. Short term missions in its very nature teaches us to make disciples and serve with intentionality. And you can’t go on a mission trip without giving up your life for a few days, which is exactly what Jesus has commanded us to do in our every day lives at home, school, and work: lose your life, take up your cross, and follow Him – experience the Kingdom!

Why is Missions Important?
As missions coach Larry Walker says, “In missions, God gets the glory, the nations get the gospel, and the church gets the good life!”

Saltshaker 2010 Philippines Hosts:
We will be hosted by Jaime & Lydia Tabingo and the Evangelical Friends of Philippines.
Jaime and Lydia began with Evangelical Friends in the Philippines in 1978.  From the one church he planted, and the student pastors he trained, the movement multiplied into more than twenty-five churches.  Another group of twenty churches are considering affiliation with Friends.  Jaime pastors a local church, teaches and disciples Bible School students who also become church planters, and serves as Superintendent of Philippines Yearly Meeting.  Jaime has also served as the Director of EFI-Asia, representing eight nations.  Evangelical

Friends are on the move in Asia!

Saltshaker 2010 Director:
Primary Director is Jesse Penna (Student Ministries Pastor, Northridge Friends).  Jesse is experienced in Saltshaker mission trip leadership, including leadership to Saltshaker 05 Philippines.

Why did we choose Philippines for Saltshaker?
We regularly ask EFM for counsel on what mission fields could particularly use a student team’s help and encouragement.  EFM Director Chuck Mylander suggested Philippines as top priority for sending a team.  We look forward to partnering again with the churches in the Philippines.  We had an unusually good experience in relationship building and encouragement in 2005, so we are particularly excited about returning.

What will the Saltshaker ministry tasks look like?
Leaders are working with our hosts to determine what ministry tasks the teams will be involved with.  There are many good options to partner with the mission and serve the church and community!  Along with some great options for partnering with church plants in Manila area, we are also considering a trip to some more remote Islands to encourage families where some new church planting is taking place, and where the Gospel is not widely known.  The online schedule will be updated as details are ready to be communicated later in spring 2010.

More information will come to you after you have registered, including packing lists, expectations, fundraising advice, schedule details as they develop, etc.

What if your parents have concerns?
It is perfectly normal for parents to be concerned about their children traveling out of the U.S. Please encourage them to read the details on this web site. They should feel free to contact Saltshaker Directors with any questions they may have about safety, concerns, leadership, or costs. Also, your parents can be provided with references of other people ‘just like them’ who have already sent their children on Saltshaker trips, and/or who have traveled internationally extensively. Contact: matt@friendsyouth.com or 316-267-0391. If possible and appropriate, Matt would be glad to come to your home or church to discuss Saltshaker – just ask!

What about safety?
Saltshaker Directors and hosts are very careful to provide a safe and secure environment to house and transport team members. We would not take a Saltshaker team into a known dangerous environment or intentionally expose them to risks at any time. As in any locations where there has been public unrest in recent years, Saltshaker directors rely on missionary-trusted local insight. We monitor reports of political unrest and travel conditions through the US State Department - http://www.state.gov/. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (www.cdc.gov/travel) provides us with information relating to potential diseases in any regions we visit.
